This Blog is the journal of my attempt to build a log cabin from dead trees and found materials.
The goal is to create a small cabin spending as little money as possible.

Let it Snow
First "big" snow on the cabin. Only about four-five inches but thats big for this neck of the woods. I thought it made a nice picture. Just a little bit got in under the door, walls aren't air tight but they are sealed.
Thanks Craig The heater can raise the temp by 30 degrees so if its 20 it can be 50 in the cabin. So far I have only slept a few hours on the floor and chilled myself good but I wasn't well prepared (no blankets) I think its do-able with the right prep.
im wondering though what did you use to fill in the gaps between the logs as you staked them? i have no experiance in log cabins so this is a very interesting idea. maybe ill try it out :)
Anonymous, I started with old cement mix but soon found it had been contaminated with moisture and would not work the way I wanted. For now I have filled the gaps with a spray on insulation "Great Stuff" just to keep the wind and snow out for the winter. In the spring I plan to get back on the gaps with some fresh mortar mix.
Thank you Tom! It was a terrific exercise in so many ways.
Beautiful! Have you spent a night in the cabin in the cold? Does it stay warm?

Looks so beautiful! Both in the 'header' picture, and in the snow.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great photo! I love your blog. I'd love to build a cabin of my own, alas I don't have the land to put it on.
ReplyDeleteThank you Joanna and Brian!
